Aaron Garland - Founder
Aaron has worn many professional hats from basketball player in the Israeli league to stockbroker, fisherman, manager of an equestrian center, carpenter and for the last twenty-two years, he has worked with teenagers as a high school English and special ed teacher and life coach. He also started the non-profit Houses for Higher Education which connected Roaring Fork Valley students with architects and builders for small-scale construction projects. Aaron is the director of the McBride Internship which annually takes eight valley students on a two-week camping trip to a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya. In 2019 he launched his life coaching for teens business which he named TigerTiger, after the William Blake poem. His coaching focuses on strengthening executive functioning skills such as time management, organization, and emotional control. He coaches teens one-on-one and in group workshops and teaches a life skills class to clients of the Jaywalker recovery program in Carbondale.
I drove down to the Roaring Fork Valley from Alaska in 1995 to test drive a winter in Colorado and life with my then-girlfriend and future wife and her three kids. They, or I, passed the test and I never left. My love for the outdoors and skiing, in particular, was the thread that tied us all together from the beginning. Working with teenagers had always been a draw for me, having had several important mentors in my own life, and I quit a carpentry job and got my teacher’s license for high school English. I was also drawn to work with students for whom the school system had not been a great fit, and taught at Yampah High School, started the middle school program at Ross Montessori, and ran the educational program at the Youth Recovery Center. I wrapped up my classroom teaching as a special education teacher at Aspen High School in 2018. Throughout my teaching career, I was bothered by nothing more than witnessing the bright and capable students who were jaded and disengaged from their own education. My efforts to get through to them were sporadically successful, always needing to balance my attention and efforts with the rest of the class. I jumped ship and started my own coaching practice in an effort to focus on those students and now have the opportunity to put all my attention on getting the results that turn a young person’s life around.
