Story telling through film
Chris Woods
Director / Cinematographer
DGA/ICG
Chris Woods has long seen life through a camera lens. He began working as a documentary cameraman in 1978 right out of California Institute of The Arts Film School. After working for Trans World International on pre-Olympic profiles of athletes and shooting three Olympic Games films, Woods signed with New York based commercial production company Fairbanks Films. His success in the sports action cinematography genre launched a career as a director / cinematographer in the commercial advertising film industry.
Best known for his commercial work in lifestyle, sports, and real people themes, Woods has directed and photographed over 500 national and international commercial campaigns. Clients General Motors, Chrysler Jeep, Toyota, Anheuser Busch, Heineken, Corona, VISA, Mountain Dew, Michelob Ultra, McDonalds, US Army and many more kept him busy for decades. Along with his commercial work, Woods has led the second unit direction and cinematography on several major motion pictures.
When working in the commercial and documentary films, Woods relies on his own vision and storytelling through the lens. In his feature work as 2nd Unit director / cinematographer, Woods focuses on contributing his strengths and ideas to the sequences while never losing sight of the director’s vision and visual style. Chris is a true team player who feels his job is to seamlessly integrate his material into the movie as a whole.
Woods is an enthusiastic cyclist and an accomplished aviator with over 7,200 hours of flight time. He’s flown in numerous types of aircraft ranging from gliders to vintage aircraft including WWII fighter planes and in contemporary aircraft. Woods’ love of aviation and visual storytelling has given him a unique perspective in capturing many aerial sequences in commercials, documentaries, and feature films.
Chris’s latest film project which he was both director and cinematographer, is the 2022 award winning feature length documentary To What Remains, produced by Imperative Entertainment and is now streaming on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play and VUDU Fandango. Woods lives in Carbondale, Colorado and is currently working on documentaries through his own personal company, Spitfire Films. Woods is also a partner in Los Angeles based The Traveling Picture Show Company and Canyon Road Entertainment.
